Seminar “Care about Water-2013” was organized by Latvian Nature Conservation Agency in the Natural History Museum of Latvia on February 5. Project manager dr.biol. Māra Pakalne informed about restoration of mire hydrology during the previous years. The meaning of raised bogs in regard to global climate maintenance and negative effect of peat extraction was explained. Rising and stabilization of water level in mires after building of dams was shown. Besides, the main results of groundwater and vascular plant monitoring in project sites were given. See the presentation below. Short insight into seminar can be seen in the video made by Vides Fakti team.
This event was organized during the World Wetland Day. Wetlands are areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres. Wetlands as ecosystem are very important for biological diversity conservation, as well as for maintenance of human welfare, therefore wetlands are protected by Ramsar Convention (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat).
