Aim of the project is to re-establish the active raised bog habitats and site hydrology in the areas that are influenced by drainage and to protect the raised bog habitats, plants and animals of European and Latvian importance.

Mire habitat management in Rozu Mire completed 03/12/2012 14:20

Mire management in Rozu Mire is completed. Activities were established in area that was affected previously by human activities. On drainage ditches 52 peat dams were build using proper technique. Positive effect of activities was observed soon after building of dams as groundwater level in ditches started to rise.

Rapid water run-off from mire has stopped after management was completed. Therefore, the negative effect of drainage ditches on raised bog habitats that have prior conservation status in EU was limited. As a result, in this part of Nature Reserve where pine stands have established and open mire habitats disappeared after drainage, hydrological regime was remarkably improved.

On December 3, 2012, results of management activities were introduced to representatives from Daugavpils Regional Environmental Service, State Stock Company “Latvia’s State Forests” and State Environmental Service. Information was given by Arnis Staris from ltd. “E-Buvvadiba”, foreman Gunars Zidens, and project staff.
