Expierence in raised bog restoration in Estonia 03/09/2011 00:08
In August, 2011 EC LIFE "Raised Bogs" team visited Estonia to rise knowledge about raised bog restoration in neighboring bogs.
We met Marika Kose together with representatives from Estonian Ministry of Environment. We wisited Tolkuse Raba (bog). Raised bog restoration has been carried out partially there by daming the ditches. Estonians are trying to plant Sphagnum and Cranberries in degradated parts of bog. We also visited place where Beaver had built a dam near peat fields.
We visited Nigula Nature Reserve together with Agu Levits. There hand-build dams are made. Agu mentioned that Latvian expierence was used in this site. After discussions everyone agreed that Beavers' dams are better. After field trip raised bog conservation in both coutries was discussed.
On our way to Viduae Nature Reserve in Saare district we watchet two Lesser Spotted Eagles. In the site we met Tenu Talvi and together discussed nature conservation problems both in Latvia and Estonia. In the site we visited speciaaly protected habitats of EU importance with Schoenus ferrugineus, Cladium mariscus and Juncus subnodulosus. These wetlands are situated in old Ancilus Lake complex of dunes and depressions. Similar complex in Latvia is situated just in Slitere National Park. Botanists were excited to see Pinguicula alpina which no longer can be found in Latvia. Walk was not easy because of overused trail. On aour way out of bog we met elk, roe deer and marten. Nice expierence and people!
