Aim of the project is to re-establish the active raised bog habitats and site hydrology in the areas that are influenced by drainage and to protect the raised bog habitats, plants and animals of European and Latvian importance.

Steering Group third meeting and opening of raised bog exhibition "Secrets of Mires" of the LIFE 08 NAT/LV/000449 EC LIFE project "Restoration of Raised Bog Habitats in the Especially Protected Nature Areas of Latvia" will take place on September 6th in Botanical Garden of University of Latvia, 2 Kandavas Street, Riga.

"Wetlands in Latvia are fantastic!" These are words from wetland experts grom Lower Saxony in Germany after visiting Aizkraukle and Aklais Mire, Engure Lake Orchid Trail, Kemeri Bogs, Melnais Lake Mire and Teici Mire.

Teachers Learning about Bogs in 3rd Project Seminar /01/06/2011/

 

On May 17th, 2011 there was a special seminar for teachers “Education of teachers on the conservation and restoration need of the active raised bog habitats” about rased bogs held in Olaine. It was 3rd project seminar. In spite of rain teachers from Riga, Olaine and Mārupe participated - together 31 participant.

May 18th is International Plant Protection Day. It is celebrated in many countries. Also Raised Bogs were in activities in Botanical Garden of University of Latvia.

Visiting LIFE projects in Eastern Latvia /12/05/2011/

 
LIFE+ Raised Bog team: Gunārs Balodis, Aivars Slišāns and Māra Pakalne visited two LIFE projects in East Latvia: Conservation of rare reptiles and amphibians in Latvia (LIFE09 NAT/LV/000239) and Restoration of Corncrake habitats in Dviete floodplain Natura 2000 site (LIFE09 NAT/LV/000237).

On April 15th, 2011 Nature Management Plan for Nature Reserve Aizkraukle Mire and Forests was approved by The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development.
