Aim of the project is to re-establish the active raised bog habitats and site hydrology in the areas that are influenced by drainage and to protect the raised bog habitats, plants and animals of European and Latvian importance.

Monitoring wells being set up
Traveling from one point to another
Author: Aivars Slišāns

Monitoring has been started in all project sites.

In 2010 vegetation releves and monitoring wells were established. Measurements will be done till 2013, end of the project. This is done to follow changes in raised bogs after hidrological regime will be raised.

Persijs Ģederts in Aizkraukle Mire monitoring hydrology regime

Habitat monitoring is done by Dr.geogr. Agnese Priede in Rožu Mire (26 releves), Aizkraukle Mire and Forests (25) and Aklais Mire (30) - altogether 81 releves. In Melnais Lake Mire Dr.biol. Liene Auniņa has established 48 releves, part of them - in peat fields.

Botanist Inese Nāburga-Jermakova transplanted Sphagnum mosses in Melnais Lake Mire
Author: Māra Pakalne

A long-term research of Sphagnum recolonization properties is carried out in Melnais Lake Mire. Four different bog-moss species (Sphagnum magellanicum, S. caespitosum, S. rubrum, S. fuscum) were transplanted in sample plots by botanist Inese Nāburga-Jermakova.

Dr.geol. Aija Dēliņa are doing hidrologigal monitoring in the project sites. Profiles of groundwater observation wells are installed at the Project sites in order to monitor the hydrological regime of the mires. The well depth is 1,5-3 m, depending on the thickness of peat layer. Totally there are nine profiles with 26 + 16 + 13 + 8 = 63 wells. Four profiles are installed in the protected area „Aizkraukles purvs un meži” - 26 wells. Two profiles are installed in the protected area „Aklais purvs” - 16 wells. One profile and one group of the wells was installed in the protected area „Melnā ezera purvs” - 13 wells. One profile was installed in the protected area „Rožu purvs” near the furthest ditch in the ditch system, where dams will be constructed – 8 wells. The wells were installed on November 2010. Groundwater level is measured twice per month manually, using water level meter, starting from December 2010.

Dr.biol. Iluta Daukšane is doing dendrochronological studies in Melnais Lake Mire and Aizkraukle Mire and Forests.
